01 / Preparation

Plan the entire system before starting

Before starting the work, determine the route of the installation, the water discharge point, installation depth, pipe diameter, gradient and the locations of the inspection chambers.

Drainage route

Mark the beginning and end of the installation and check whether any other underground services run along the route.

Water discharge point

The system must have a clear and correctly positioned discharge point, such as a chamber, tank or downstream outlet.

Ground conditions

Soil type, groundwater level, frost depth and surface loads affect the method used to construct the drainage system.

These instructions provide general guidance. The depth, diameter, layer thicknesses and gradient must be selected according to the design and the conditions of the specific project.

02 / Installation depth

The depth depends on the purpose of the drainage system

There is no single universal depth suitable for every installation. The soil type, foundations, groundwater level, loads and final discharge level must all be taken into account.

03 / Installation gradient

Maintain a constant gradient without local depressions

The pipe should be laid at a constant gradient towards the discharge point. In straightforward installations, a working gradient of approximately 0.5–1% is commonly used. The final value should, however, be determined by the design and the available difference in elevation.

Gradient inspection

Check the level along every section using a surveyor’s level, laser level or spirit level. A local depression in the pipe may cause water to stagnate and sediment to accumulate.

04 / Pipe diameter selection

Design flow rate and pipe selection

Pipe diameter selection should take into account the volume of incoming water, the drained area, rainfall intensity, surface type, installation length, gradient and ground conditions.

Simplified formula for calculating the design runoff Q = A × i × C

The formula is used to estimate the volume of water flowing from the drained area. It does not independently determine the capacity of a specific pipe.

05 / Step-by-step installation

The correct sequence of installation work

Mark the route

Mark the pipe route, chamber locations and water discharge point.

Check the location of other underground services.

Establish the levels

Determine the starting level, final level and required gradient.

First check the level of the final discharge point.

Excavate the trench

Allow sufficient space for the bedding, pipe, side fill and cover layer.

Deep trenches must be properly secured.
04

Level the trench bottom

Remove sharp stones, roots, debris and any soft depressions.

The pipe must be supported evenly along its entire length.

Lay the geotextile

If required by the design, line the bottom and sides of the trench with geotextile.

The geotextile does not replace the PP700 filtration wrap.

Prepare the bedding

Lay and level a layer of clean, washed aggregate.

Do not use material containing clay, silt or fine sediment.

Lay the FOLKUL DRAIN pipe

Unroll the pipe onto the bedding while maintaining the correct direction and constant gradient.

Do not drag the PP700 filtration wrap over sharp edges.

Connect the components

Install couplings, tees, elbows and inspection chambers.

Select fittings that match the pipe diameter.

Check the gradient

Inspect the entire route before placing the surrounding aggregate.

Correct every local depression before continuing.

Place the surrounding aggregate

Distribute the aggregate evenly along both sides and above the pipe.

Do not drop aggregate onto the pipe from a significant height.

Close the geotextile

Wrap the geotextile around the aggregate layer, maintaining the required overlap.

This reduces mixing between the aggregate and the surrounding soil.

Inspect and backfill

Take photographs and check the outlet, connections and inspection chambers.

Backfill the trench only after completing the inspection.

Layer arrangement in a drainage trench

The geotextile forms a separation layer around the aggregate, while the PP700 filtration wrap remains directly on the pipe.

Layer dimensions

The thickness of the bedding, side fill and cover above the pipe must be selected according to the pipe diameter, soil conditions, loads and project design.

08 / Connecting the system

Couplings, tees and inspection chambers

Individual pipe sections should be connected using components matching the pipe diameter. Inspection chambers provide access for inspection, flushing and subsequent system maintenance.

Connect two straight pipe sections of the same diameter.

Tees and reducers

Allow branches to be created and the system diameter to be changed.

Inspection chambers

Provide inspection access and enable the drainage system to be cleaned.

Check everything before backfilling

Inspection 01

Constant gradient

No local depressions or sections running against the required gradient.

Inspection 02

Connections

Couplings, tees, inspection chambers and the outlet are securely positioned.

Inspection 03

PP700 filtration wrap

The filtration wrap is not torn, displaced or otherwise damaged.

Inspection 04

Clear water outlet

Water can leave the system freely and reach the designated discharge point.

10 / Common installation mistakes

What should be avoided

Error 01

No effective outlet

The water has nowhere to discharge or the outlet is positioned too high.

Error 02

Contaminated aggregate

Clay, silt and fine particles restrict water flow through the filtration zone.

Error 03

Uneven trench bottom

Point support may cause the drainage pipe to settle or deform.

Error 04

No final inspection

Backfilling without inspection makes later corrections significantly more difficult.
